Ethan's Surgery

Today we took Ethan to the Hospital where one of the nations top urologists did a little procedure on him. He's already had this procedure done once the day after he was born. However, they didn't do it right and it has left him with adhesions as well as some other issues. Therefore, we were sent to a specialist and soon realized we were in great hands. Ethan's doctor really is what all the reports put him up to be. He's a great doctor and one of the top pediatric urologists in the nation. We were glad to be taking care of this before Ethan gets any older. =)

We arrived at the hospital at 6:15 am.
Daddy changed him from his pj's to his hospital pj's.
They were so cute.
They only had pink in this size,
but they're pink pigs so I think it's okay. He liked walking around on his hospital bed,
pulling on all the tubes and wires, etc. Using the edge as a seat.
Quick picture with mom and dad.

Our nurse showing Ethan how she's going to
listen to his heart beat by doing it on his bear.
Passing the time while we waited for the anesthesiologist.
Still passing the time. . .

We ended up waiting 2 hours in this little room.
The toys got old really fast.
I started walking the halls with him to keep him happy. I love the back of hospital gowns. . .
when they're not on me. =)

They gave him some pre-meds that made him sleepy, very relaxed, and were supposed to cause a bit of amnesia. After about 10 minutes of taking these meds, he was getting very lethargic and zoning out. The anesthesiologist came and carried him off to surgery. It's very hard to watch your little one go into the hands of a stranger. So much trust. Ethan peeked back at me over the anesthesiologists shoulder, but was in too much of a fog to seem to even notice what was going on.

They explained to us that they would take him back and put a mask on him for him to breathe in some anesthesia which would then put him completely under. Then they put in an IV and a tube in his throat and more tubes in his nose. Then they did a Coddle Block (similar to an epidural), making him numb from the bellybutton down.

Jon and I waited and tried to keep our mind busy during that time. Thankfully it was only 1 hour. The doctor came out and told us that everything went as planned and there were no complications. A few minutes later a nurse took us back to where Ethan was. We held him and waited for the anesthesia to wear off and for him to come around.

At first he seemed a little confused about it all. He kept trying to take out his IV, and pull off his blood pressure monitor on his foot. He was crying a little, but we could tell he wasn't quite coherent yet. We just continued to wait, and after another hour when he still wasn't waking up, we started to get him dressed to see if it would rouse him. You can see how well that worked. He was still out of it. I was pretty sure it was not only because of the anesthesia, but it also happened to be his nap time. After checking him over thoroughly they let us take our sleepy boy home to recover. We're so glad everything went as planned and there were no complications. Ethan was a great patient.
