Shaylin wanted to test the theory that during the winter, if chickens are given more light their egg production will be greater. She tracked how many eggs the chickens laid for two weeks when we put in a light with a timer and gave the chickens 2 extra hours of light each day. Then we turned the light off for two weeks and let natural daylight happen. They actually laid more eggs without the extra hours of daylight. Her conclusion: The chickens like their extra hours of sleep!
Shaylin was selected to participate in the District Science Fair. At her school, they only pick from 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, so this was the first year she had the opportunity to be selected.
She did a great job of presenting her material to the judges and also talked about what other factors might be contributors to possibly changing the outcome of her findings.
She scored very well on her judging sheet.
